How much did responsiveness actually improve as a result of Meta's enhanced hand-tracking on the Quest?

August 23, 2023

Hand-tracking and controller-less navigation were two features of the Vision Pro that Apple briefly demonstrated at its WWDC in 2023, and they appear to have struck a chord with every member of the XR community (and business).

Because of the most recent upgrade, the Quest VR headset’s hand-tracking features a 40% reduction in latency.

Therefore, Meta’s Hands 2.2 tracking improvements are included in OS version v56, which is now being distributed to Quest headsets. And even then, it can increase to 75% for quick movements because, after all, quick hand movements require less precision.

When it was still only a future feature, Meta wrote a blog post about it that includes some suggested apps that you can use to see the difference:

  • Move Fast (demo app)
  • Litesport
  • VR Workout

These updates are coming to the Meta Quest 2 and the Meta Quest Pro, and when the Quest 3 launches, they will also be made much more refinedly available. Additionally, the Pro in particular has received extra bonuses like:

Multimodal tracking, which encompasses:

○Support for Hand and Controller gameplay

○ Instant transition between hands and controllers

Hand tracking is crucial because it makes AR and VR more accessible to us without requiring us to make any uncomfortable adjustments. Or, to put it another way, “Man, it just feels more natural to achieve things by pointing, pinching, and snapping.”
