Super Mario Bros. Wonder may be forging new territory even if Super Mario titles are not known for having any kind of online multiplayer options.

As is customary for most Mario games, it was initially assumed that Super Mario Bros. Wonder would not feature any online multiplayer features. On August 31, 2023, a new Nintendo Direct disproved that hypothesis and provided more information about the multiplayer features of the game, including some inventive workarounds that let friends and complete strangers play the game together if they so desire. The option to play with others from across the world is a step in the right direction for Nintendo, even though it is still not the type of online multiplayer that often comes to mind.

On October 20, 2023, Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be made available only on the Nintendo Switch. The 2D side-scrolling platformer adds some very chaotic new elements and power-ups while maintaining a more conventional feel to the franchise. The game has multiplayer for up to four players in local co-op, similar to Super Mario 3D World and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, but more lately has also unveiled an interesting approach to online multiplayer gaming that seems somewhat reminiscent of Mario Kart multiplayer.

The Online Multiplayer in Super Mario Bros. Wonder Is Quite Different

By taking a different approach to multiplayer than previous Mario games, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is breaking the norm. The new Mario experience seems to be incorporating some of Mario Kart’s ghost-like time trials against other racers thanks to “Live Shadows” of other players playing the game concurrently around the world, but with the added benefit of cooperating with each other by lending items, reviving fallen players, or encouraging each other on. Without the annoying mechanic of bumping into one another any more, friends can enjoy playing the game together or competing in speedrunning-style competitions.

Making Private Rooms Enables Friends To Play Together Or Race Super Mario Bros. Wonder can be played online in a private room with a few different possibilities for friends. out to 12 pals can congregate in a private room lobby, and they can split out into groups of up to 4 to enter levels together. With two Nintendo Switches being able to connect, online and local gaming can be merged. When friends are connected online, they can play together in a level as semi-translucent copies of their characters with names listed over their heads.

Even though they cannot directly contact, people on the same level can help one another by giving each other goods, reviving dead characters, and more.

Instead of just progressing through a level, there is an option to host a Friend Race from the private room for up to four players for a more competitive edge. Each competitor runs and jumps across a level while dodging adversaries and pits to reach the finish line first in a race that is very similar to a speedrun. In order to win some races, competitors must also defeat bosses or locate the Wonder Seed.
However, racing through the circuit is probably challenging enough with other players around to cause diversions. It does not seem like there is a means for competitors to sabotage each other during these races, similar to a Mario Kart banana peel sort of interaction.

In Mario Wonder, Live Player Shadows from Around the World

A global lobby connects gamers from all around the world when someone chooses to play Super Mario Bros. Wonder online. These other players will appear as live shadows that are semi-transparent and may be seen moving across the different stages in real time. Players can communicate with one another even when they are not actively playing together by helping each other out when one of them has lost a life, giving each other things, or even exchanging emojis. Standees, which can help other players, are one entertaining new mechanic in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Heart Points And Standees In Super Mario Wonder

A new gadget in online gaming enables players to leave a character standee wherever they like to assist others. The greatest position for these standees is adjacent to a hazardous area or trap since they can resurrect a character who has perished if they can get to it before the countdown expires. Standees come in a variety of designs, and you can buy them from the in-game stores to alter how they look.

A player will see and then enhance the heart points of a standee left by another player online when they touch it. Each time a player assists another online player by giving them stuff, reviving them, or engaging with them through their standee or Live Shadow, they receive heart points. Even though it has not yet been revealed how the heart points can be applied, they are a useful way to show how engaged a player has been in online multiplayer games.

Additionally, Super Mario Bros. Wonder provides local co-op play.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s couch co-op multiplayer mode allows up to four local family members and friends to play together. The fact that none of them are displayed as transparent images on the screen offers a little advantage, but unlike online play, everyone must stay within close proximity to one another. Local couch co-op will still be free of any character collisions, which is a welcome move given the characters’ size after obtaining an Elephant power-up, but players can laugh together as they share a screen and go through each level.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder can, of course, be played alone as well. The game seems to be one that will be equally pleasant for everyone, whether they are playing it alone, with a huge group of pals, or concurrently with people from all over the world. Prior to the game’s release, more details about its many aspects will probably still be made public. On October 20, 2023, Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be made available for the Nintendo Switch.
