Think & Built Bigger Faster Better

The Gmail mobile apps for Android and iOS will soon have a native translation feature from Google. You can use it to swiftly translate emails from a foreign language to the language of your choice. The function has long been accessible via the internet.

If the email is in a language other than English, Gmail will display a dismissable  “Translate” banner above the email content as it becomes available to you. The “Google.com Mail display language” in your account preferences is listed as your preferred language. The message will be translated to that language after you click the banner. When you click the translate button, the Settings gear that displays allows you to change the clothing language.

As expected, Gmail recognizes the native language automatically. The translated version and the original version can be quickly switched between. Additionally, Gmail enables automatic translation of all incoming emails from that language. Additionally, you have the choice to never translate a particular language. You can do that by choosing to do so from the translation settings menu or by responding to the prompt that displays after you remove the banner.

Please take note that unless you agree the aforementioned banner to never translate that language, rejecting the banner will not prevent it from appearing again for that language. The three-dot menu that appears in the top-right corner of the screen allows you to manually translate an email even in the latter scenario.

According to Google, a native translation tool in Gmail mobile apps has been a “highly-requested feature.” Users had to previously open emails on the desktop web to read messages in a foreign language, copy-paste the content on google translate or take a screenshot on mobile and translate it using Google Lens or Translate.

Google says this translation tool supports “a wide range of languages.” It is likely the same Google Translate-powered tool found on the web version, which lets you translate emails across more than 100 languages. There’s no admin control for this feature, so it will be available to all eligible users as soon as it’s rolled out.

Speaking of eligibility, all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google Accounts will get the new native translation tool in Gmail for Android and iOS. The rollout for Android users (both Rapid and Scheduled Release domains) began Tuesday, August 8. Google expects to push the feature to everyone around the world in a couple of weeks. The rollout for iOUS users will begin on Monday, August 21.
