With the potential to streamline insurance claims, assist radiologists, dermatologists, cardiologists, and other specialties by improving data-based pattern recognition, and even play a direct role in the doctor’s office by informing both patients and doctors, artificial intelligence has a bright future in the field of health care. Please don’t misunderstand me; I have the utmost regard for clinical judgment, original thinking, and the necessity to protect patient privacy. No matter how pleasant the electronic voice is, it can never replace my own empathy. As a result, AI must act as a form of co-pilot in the medical setting.
One area where AI will significantly alter the game hasn’t gotten nearly enough attention: combating medicine shortages while also assisting in the creation of new drugs and the repurposing of existing ones. Drug shortages are becoming more severe, and essential antibiotics like amoxicillin—though commonly overprescribed by doctors—remain necessary. Important mental health medications like Adderall, Vyvanse, and Concerta for ADHD are still in short supply. This is problematic for our teens, many of whom are returning to traditional classrooms after being exempt from restrictive pandemic policies but who are experiencing higher levels of anxiety, social difficulties, and academic delays.
