Fans of the devices will have to say goodbye to an era when Nintendo ends online support for the 3DS and Wii U in 2019.

“As of early April 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication will end service for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U software,” Nintendo of America tweeted on October 4. We appreciate your continuing interest in our products.

Nintendo has previously stated plans to shut down the eShops for the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, so it’s evident that the Super Mario producer is eager to put an end to the chapter on its earlier devices.

Animal Crossing enthusiasts are particularly hurt by the news because New Leaf, the mainstream game before Animal Crossing: New Horizons, is set to lose one of its most important components: visiting other players’ villages. While many 3DS/Wii U fans are finding it difficult to accept the news, this is especially true for Animal Crossing aficionados.
