Dr. Abdulwasiu Ajagbe, a lecturer at the University of Ibadan (UI), stated on Wednesday that professionals shouldn’t consider artificial intelligence (AI) to be a danger to the field of civil engineering.
Ajagbe, a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Ibadan, made this statement while delivering a lecture at the inaugural distinguished lecture of the Osun Chapter of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers in Osogbo.
According to Ajagbe, AI should be used as a tool to improve the work of engineers rather than being viewed as a threat.
There is no reason to be concerned about AI replacing engineers, he added, because it still needs human natural intelligence (input) to operate.
“I encourage civil engineers to adopt AI so they won’t be left behind in the development of engineering technology.
Any civil engineer who is not prepared to adapt to the development of AI would be left behind in the development of engineering technology, according to this statement.
According to the don, even though AI machines might digest data reliably and promptly, it would still require the skill of an engineer to apply it properly to get the desired result.
He claimed that the contribution of AI to contemporary engineering was commendable because it has made risk analysis, defect identification, and work efficiency easier.
Before they are left behind and their services become obsolete, he urged engineers to align with and update to the burgeoning trend of AI in engineering.
