95% of Americans, according to a recent AddictiveTips survey, are eager to adopt augmented reality/virtual reality (AR/VR) technology, but they cite high costs and health risks as the main obstacles to mainstream adoption.

The purpose of the survey, which questioned 1,500 US citizens aged 16 and older, was to learn how people in America now use and prefer AR/VR technology.

Strong interest is observed for Apple Vision Pro.

56% of respondents think Apple’s new Vision Pro technology will have a successful public introduction. Despite the fact that this mixed-reality device has a variety of uses not seen on comparable devices, the vast majority of respondents (82%) claimed they would solely use it for leisure (gaming, viewing movies). Other use-case examples are:

Modeling (46%)

Education and learning (33%)

Editing and creative design (28%).

Work in the profession (14%)

Passion for AR/VR technology:

Of all respondents, 46% had previously used an AR/VR gadget, and 10% had one themselves. Only 3% of respondents, however, said they would be willing to pay the full retail price for the Apple Vision Pro.

Despite their excitement, 49% of respondents haven’t tested the technology yet, and high prices are a major deterrent. This group also cites access restrictions and health issues (nausea, eye strain) as entry hurdles.

The gap between generations:

With greater ownership rates of 12% and 18%, respectively, Gen Z and Millennials are the most prominent users of AR/VR technology. The most popular option is the Oculus Quest 2 by Meta.

The fact that 70% of Baby Boomers indicated interest in trying AR/VR technology suggests a startling openness to investigating this cutting-edge technology.

Future of AR and VR:

While 51% of respondents anticipate that Apple’s new device would spur the development of AR/VR innovation, some are concerned that it may displace more conventional portable devices like tablets and the Nintendo Switch.
