The police and army have already tightened security for Wednesday’s vote to elect a president for the remainder of Mr. Rajapaksa, which ends in November 2024.

Sri Lanka’s state-owned Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) on Sunday cut the selling price of diesel and crude oil, the first drop after five hikes since February. The selling price of diesel and diesel has been reduced by Rs 20. Both were raised to Rs 50 and Rs 60 in late May. Mr. Wickemesinghe, a six-time former Prime Minister, was supported for the position of President by Mr. Rajapaksa, which remains the largest in the legislature.
