According to a draft rule on academic degrees, students at Chinese institutions who use artificial intelligence to ghostwrite their academic theses risk having their degrees revoked. On Monday, China’s top legislative body, the 14th National People’s Congress, received the draft law on academic degrees for review. It specifies that the degree evaluation committee has the authority to withdraw a person’s degree if they have used plagiarism, forgery, or data fabrication in their thesis. The proposal stipulates that actions that constitute crimes, such as identity theft and using someone else’s credentials to gain admission to a higher education institution, must be looked into for criminal liability.
