In order to enable device manufacturers to create a single device that can connect to AWS IoT Core for both Amazon Sidewalk and LoRaWAN networks in the United States as well as to any LoRaWAN network outside of the United States, Semtech Corporation and Oxit, a provider of IoT solutions and services, have partnered.
In order to link billions of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and send trillions of messages to Amazon Web Services (AWS), AWS IoT Core was developed. Customers can connect to AWS IoT Core for both Amazon Sidewalk and LoRaWan through the Semtech and Oxit collaboration using the Oxtech multi-connectivity module, which enables the device to select the best network based on coverage and connectivity whether customers use public or private networks.
Amazon Sidewalk is a long-range, low-bandwidth community network created to safely connect billions of Internet of Things devices, and it has coverage for more than 90% of the U.S. population. To link IoT devices to the cloud, Amazon Sidewalk leverages Sidewalk Bridges from participating vendors, such as certain Echo and Ring devices. AWS IoT Core for Sidewalk is the cloud endpoint for external devices attempting to connect to the Amazon Sidewalk network.
The simple-to-use OxTech multi-connectivity module from Oxit integrates all necessary hardware and firmware components and links devices to AWS IoT Core for Amazon Sidewalk or LoRaWAN. Due to the independence of these integration techniques, users can utilize them separately or in combination to develop applications for both AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN networks and AWS IoT Core for Amazon Sidewalk simultaneously using the same hardware. The module combines the Oxit SW stack for Sidewalk and LoRaWAN with the SiLabs EFR32MG24 and Semtech SX1262 chipsets.
According to Tom Mueller, EVP and GM of IoT system products at Semtech Corporation, “earlier this year, Semtech announced that the first third-party Amazon Sidewalk products, based on Semtech’s LoRa technology, are now available.” This gives diverse network requirements and dependable coverage.
As a result, original equipment manufacturers can create a single hardware device that supports both Amazon Sidewalk and AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN. A statement by Josh Cox, CEO of Oxit, “Customers can now not only use the same module for connecting devices to both networks with an integrated network stack, but they can also write their own applications directly on the module, simplifying deployment and speeding up time to market.” Customers who are using the OxTech module to design their products can quickly onboard the device into AWS IoT Core via either LoRaWAN or Amazon Sidewalk without changing their application, which reduces the difficulties associated with integrating different networks.
The OxTech module was the only option, according to asset monitoring company Cognosos, that could accommodate numerous use cases with the fewest external components. Additionally, it offered the flexibility they required to accommodate both other LPWA protocols as well as their own.
