The National Intelligence Organization (MIT) has detained a person who was attempting to con entrepreneurs and high-ranking government officials by utilizing artificial intelligence to imitate President Recep Tayyip Erdoan’s voice.

An investigation was started after MIT learned of a person’s attempt to use Erdoan’s voice as a clone for personal gain by using an AI application.

The suspect called business people from more than ten different phone lines that were registered under foreign identities using this voice cloning.

The identity and location of the person were discovered by MIT. The culprit was swiftly arrested and handed over to law enforcement officials with the aid of sensitive operations carried out by MIT’s cyber security sections.

Officials from MIT stressed the need for citizens to exercise vigilance in the face of such cybercrime attempts, adding that more stringent security measures will be adopted to combat voice and identity fraud. Applications like deepfakes, notably voice cloning, have increased instances of fraudulent activity with the global spread of artificial intelligence, while their malicious use simultaneously poses a cyber security issue.
