Since creator material now accounts for a larger portion of the game’s growth, Epic will earn less money overall.
Following a metaverse-inspired shift of its well-known online game Fortnite, video game maker Epic Games is letting go of roughly 16% of its workforce.
According to CEO Tim Sweeney’s memo to staff on Thursday, the layoffs will effect 830 employees of Epic Games.
According to Sweeney, Epic Games has been “growing Fortnite as a metaverse-inspired ecosystem for creators.” Since creator material now accounts for a larger portion of the game’s growth, Epic will earn less money overall.
Sweeney continued, “I had long been hopeful that we could force through this transformation without layoffs, but looking back, I see that this was unrealistic.
In the hypothetical metaverse, the internet transforms into an engaging virtual setting that can be used for activities such as work, recreation, socializing, and events. Despite being in its very early phases of development, the announcement from Epic Games suggests that significant video game creators have been working hard to harness it.
