The focus of next month’s Meta Connect 2023 conference will be on all things pertaining to AR, VR, and AI. Prior to that, it appears that Meta is getting ready to enable users to “ground” themselves.
Legs are a new addition that Meta is providing Quest Avatars in Quest Home. Prepare to see some virtual legs shortly if you’re wearing a Quest Avatar. According to UploadVR (via The Verge), the v57 upgrade on the Public Test Channel has given avatars in Quest Home legs. This improvement is not currently apply to Horizon Worlds, though.
Until you check them out in a virtual mirror, your legs won’t be visible if you’re a beta user. Additionally, it appears that when you crouch, the avatar won’t imitate your movements. This is understandable because current consumer VR systems lack a method for tracking leg movement.
Since none of the VR systems now available for purchase have the capacity to monitor your legs, even if many VR apps and games created by other companies already allow you to have virtual legs, the virtual legs do not move exactly like your real legs when you gaze down.
Even though Quest headsets can track your hand motions and allow you use your hands as controllers instead, they currently are unable to do the same for your leg and foot motions.
Mark Zuckerberg said that Meta was considering the notion of including legs back in October of last year. Users have only ever mentioned having legs in Horizon Home, the first area you land when you put on your headset, up until this point. The situation could, however, alter when Meta Connect 2023 approaches.
