Moderate Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives have formed a working group on artificial intelligence to examine the issue of what restrictions, if any, should be put on the technology. In announcing the group’s formation on Tuesday, the New Democrat Coalition stated that it will collaborate with the Biden administration, businesses, and other lawmakers to create “sensible, bipartisan policies to address this emerging technology.”

Although artificial intelligence has been around for a while, ChatGPT’s ascent earlier this year helped it gain popularity since generative AI can use data to produce language that appears human. Legislators are looking at methods to minimize the risks while maximizing the benefits, especially for national security.

Representative Derek Kilmer, a Democrat from Washington state, will serve as the group’s leader.

Representatives Sara Jacobs of California, Susie Lee of Nevada, Don Beyer of Virginia, Jeff Jackson of North Carolina, Haley Stevens of Michigan, and Sara Jacobs of California serve as vice chairs.

The White House said in July that several AI firms, including OpenAI, Alphabet, and Meta Platforms, have made voluntary commitments to put safety precautions in place, such as watermarking AI-generated content.

Chuck Schumer, the majority leader in the Senate, announced last month that legislators will learn about potential legislative safeguards from developers, businesspeople, and experts later this year.
