Data from the Vahan Dashboard of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways show that Tamil Nadu has become a significant manufacturer of electric vehicles (EVs) in India. Out of the 10 lakh EVs sold in the country in the current year, more than four lakh were produced in Tamil Nadu. These electric automobiles, which are made by ten different companies based in the state, come in a range of styles, including two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and cars.

According to data from the Vahan Dashboard, 10,44,600 electric vehicles (EVs) in all of India were registered with Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) between January and 20 September. According to registration information from all of the state’s RTOs, Tamil Nadu sold 4,14,802 electric automobiles on its own, according to a story in Hindustan Times.

The government’s commitment to promoting growth was highlighted by the official who praised this achievement as an important milestone showcasing the state’s diverse and lively presence in numerous areas.

Tamil Nadu is well on its way to realizing its goal of being the world’s hub for electric vehicles and has already established itself as one of the top 10 auto hubs globally. The creation of charging infrastructure and battery manufacture have both been actively supported by the government.

Chief Minister M. K. Stalin announced the “Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicles Policy 2023” on February 14. This new approach aims to safeguard the development of the state’s ecosystem, encourage the use of EVs, and create EV-centric cities inside Tamil Nadu. Additionally, it aims to establish Tamil Nadu as South-East Asia’s top location for EV manufacturing.

For the adoption of e-mobility solutions throughout the state, cities like Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore, Chennai, Madurai, Salem, and Tirunelveli have been designated as pilot cities. Under this strategy, new and expanding projects are eligible for a number of incentives, including capital support, SGST reimbursement, turnover-based subsidies, and subsidies for advanced chemistry cells.

By 2025, the state expects to have spent more than Rs 50,000 crore on the production of electric vehicles. By 2030, Tamil Nadu wants to produce 30% of all electric vehicles sold in India and significantly increase exports worldwide.

Pending regulatory clearance, the updated EV strategy includes recommendations to modify energy consumption and pricing for public charging stations. For the first two years of these modifications, existing expenses will be reduced by 75%, and for the next two years, energy prices will be reduced by 50%.

According to government declarations, the presence of significant automakers like Hyundai, Nissan, TVS, Mahindra, and Daimler highlights Tamil Nadu’s development as a center of the automotive industry. New businesses like Ather Electric, Ola Electric, Ampere, and others who have constructed electric car production facilities have been drawn to the state’s flourishing manufacturing climate.
